Armistice Day

The SCRSA commemorates Armistice Day on November 11th, at 11 a.m. at the WWI Commemorative area at Caroline Bay (if it is wet the service will be held at the Club).

At 11 a.m. church bells across the country will ring and the public are asked to stop what they are doing for two minutes, pull your car over to the side of the road, and observe two minutes silence in remembrance.

WW1 Commemorations

RSA Executive Jill Pearce & Geoff Pickering, Councillor Steve Wills and RSA General Manager Michelle Brown dressed in period costume for the Plaque unveiling at the Phar Lap Memorial

The South Canterbury W100 Commemorative Committee have been busy in 2014.  Firstly was the unveiling of a plaque to the 8th South Canterbury Mounted Rifles at the Phar Lap Memorial site at the Phar Lap Raceway on 16th August 2014.  A large gathering attended by over 200 people with cadets, soldiers from the 2/4 Battalion, Mayor Damon Odey and other distinguished guests.  The 16th August is an auspicious date for South Cantgerbury as this was the date that infantry and mounted rifle soldiers left Timaru for WW1.

On December 5th we hosted our annual Christmas Carols.  This year however we had a different theme, commemorating the 1914 Christmas Truce.  There were poems and letters read out by cadets and guest Gavin Marriott of the Passchendaele Society.  See link to video depicting the truce below.
